Abstract:

Contains correspondence, property and legal records, writings, and genealogical materials and accounts of the Boyd family of Indiana. Chiefly correspondence and papers of Dr. Samuel S. Boyd, including his Civil War scrapbook with 3 photographs, documents, and newspaper articles written for the True Republican by Boyd, who volunteered as a surgeon after his wife's death in 1862; also contains the Civil War diary of his brother, William A. Boyd, both officers in the 84th Indiana Volunteers. Includes correspondence of S.S. Boyd's first wife, Monimia Bunnell, with whose father Boyd studied medicine, and a few letters from Boyd's second wife, the poet, Louise Vickroy. Letters from various other members of the Boyd family of Indiana are also included, along with genealogical notes and charts, and clippings.
A detailed manuscript map of Franklin, Tennessee, drawn in pencil by Samuel S. Boyd and presented to his son, Lawson A. Boyd, depicts the settlement and position of various regiments, equipment, and supplies on April 10, 1863.
Photographs include a group portrait of Company "C" 84th Indiana Volunteers with a list of names of those pictured (including Major W.A. Boyd). Dublin, Indiana photographs include the academy with two portraits inset, the "Double Inn" with men seated in front, and a large group portrait taken at a Boyd family picnic.

Samuel Scott Boyd was born March 31, 1820 in Jacksonburg, Wayne County, Indiana. He was married first on October 14, 1844 to Monimia Bunnell. Following her death in 1862, he married a second time to Louise Vickroy on September 5, 1865. Boyd died April 15, 1888 in Dublin, Wayne County, Indiana.
William A. Boyd was born in 1824. On February 25, 1851 he was married to Sarah A. Thompson. He enlisted on August 11, 1862 as a Captain and was commissioned on September 3, 1862 into "C" Company, 84th Indiana Infantry. He was promoted to Major on December 10, 1863 and died of wounds on July 11, 1864.
